Only What Is Done For Christ

When the time has come
To leave this world behind,
What will be said of you?
What will remain in mind?

A living sacrifice for truth?
A soul wholly given to Christ?
A life transformed—from sinner to saint?
A heart softened by His grace?

One question alone will stand:
Did I live for self, or for God?
Did I seek His glory above all,
And labour to lead the lost to the Cross?

And when you stand before God,
What will you hear from Christ?
“Welcome, My good and faithful servant,”
Or, “Depart—I never knew you”?

For only what is done for Christ will last;
All else will fade and fall away.
So lay up treasures in heaven above,
And turn from the vain things of earth.

Live now with eternity in view—
Let every breath and step proclaim
A life poured out, a race well run,
All to the honour of His name.
