The Omnipresence of God

open book

The omnipresence of God is one of the most profound and foundational truths revealed in Scripture. It teaches that God is present everywhere, at all times, with His entire being. This is not merely a poetic expression, but a necessary truth that flows from His infinite nature. If God is infinite, then He cannot be confined. If He is sovereign, then He must be present to govern all things. If He sustains creation, then He must be present within it.

Louis Berkhof defines omnipresence as “that perfection of the Divine Being by which He transcends all spatial limitations, and yet is present in every point of space with His whole Being.” This definition preserves both God’s transcendence and His immanence. He is above all creation, yet intimately present within it.

Scripture consistently affirms this truth. Psalm 139:7–10 declares, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.”

This passage makes clear that there is no realm, physical or spiritual, where God is absent.

I. The Nature of Divine Presence

God’s presence is fundamentally different from created presence. Created beings exist in space. God exists beyond space, yet fully present within it. Thomas Aquinas wrote that God is present in all things as their sustaining cause, not as a physical object.

This means that God does not occupy space like matter. Rather, space itself exists because God sustains it. Every atom, every star, and every living being continues to exist because God is present and actively sustaining creation.

As I reflect upon this doctrine, I am struck by its implications for both theology and personal faith. God’s omnipresence means that He is not distant. He is not removed from His creation. He is present in every moment of history, every circumstance of life, and every trial His people endure.

There has never been a moment when God was absent. There has never been a place where His authority does not reach. This truth brings both comfort and reverence.

Jeremiah 23:24 says, “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?”

This filling is not physical extension, but divine presence and authority. Herman Bavinck explains that God is present everywhere “not by division, but by the fullness of His being.”

In the New Testament, Acts 17:27–28 declares, “He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and exist.” This reveals that God’s presence is not passive. It is active. He sustains life itself.

II. Christ and Omnipresence

The omnipresence of Christ affirms His deity. When Jesus said, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age,”

He claimed a divine attribute. Only God can be present with all believers, in all places, at all times. John Calvin wrote, “There is no place where God is not present, and His power is everywhere.”

III. Theological Implications

God’s omnipresence ensures His perfect knowledge. Because He is present everywhere, nothing escapes His sight.

Hebrews 4:13 says, “There is no creature hidden from His sight.”

It also guarantees His sovereign control. Stephen Charnock wrote that God’s presence is the foundation of His government over creation.

IV. Author’s Reflection

This doctrine transforms how we live. It reminds us that we are never alone. In suffering, God is present. In prayer, God is present. In worship, God is present.

Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.”

This truth has sustained believers throughout history. The omnipresence of God is not merely an abstract doctrine. It is a living reality. God is present everywhere, sustaining creation, governing history, and dwelling with His people.

As believers, this truth gives us confidence, reverence, and hope. There is nowhere God is absent. This truth magnifies His glory and assures His people of His constant presence.
