Is God Everywhere?

One of the foundational attributes of God revealed in Scripture is omnipresence; the truth that God is present everywhere at all times. But what does the Bible actually say? Is God everywhere in the same sense, and how should believers understand His presence? This article examines the biblical testimony to God’s omnipresence using the witness of Scripture.

The Meaning of Omnipresence

The term omnipresent does not appear in the Bible, but the concept is clearly taught. Omnipresence means that God is not limited by space, not confined to one location, and never absent from any part of His creation. Unlike human beings, who can only be in one place at a time, God is present everywhere fully and simultaneously.

God’s Presence Throughout Creation

The Bible repeatedly affirms that there is no place where God is not present.

“Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the dawn,
If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
Even there Your hand will lead me,
And Your right hand will lay hold of me.”

Psalm 139:7–10

This passage makes it unmistakably clear that no realm; heaven, earth, or the depths exists apart from God’s presence.

God Is Not Confined to Physical Space

God’s omnipresence also means that He cannot be contained by buildings, temples, or geographical locations.

“But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built!”
1 Kings 8:27

While God may manifest His presence in specific ways, He is never restricted to those places.

God’s Presence in Heaven and on Earth

Scripture teaches that God reigns in heaven, yet remains actively present on earth.

“Am I a God who is near,” declares the LORD,
“And not a God far off?
Can a man hide himself in hiding places
So I do not see him?” declares the LORD.
“Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the LORD.”

Jeremiah 23:23–24

God’s presence is both near and far, transcending human limitations of distance and perception.

Omnipresence and God’s Knowledge

God’s omnipresence is closely connected to His perfect knowledge. Because He is everywhere, nothing escapes His awareness.

“The eyes of the LORD are in every place,
Watching the evil and the good.”

Proverbs 15:3

This truth brings both comfort and accountability, comfort for the righteous, and warning for the unrepentant.

God’s Special Presence With His People

While God is present everywhere, Scripture also speaks of a unique, relational presence with those who trust Him.

“Do not fear, for I am with you;
Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.”

Isaiah 41:10

God’s omnipresence does not make Him distant or impersonal; rather, it assures believers that He is always near, attentive, and involved.

Conclusion

The Bible clearly teaches that God is everywhere, in heaven and on earth, in light and darkness, near and far. His omnipresence means that He is never absent, never unaware, and never unreachable.

To ask, “Is God everywhere?” is to encounter a resounding biblical answer: Yes. God fills the heavens and the earth, sustains all things, and remains present with His creation at every moment.

“For in Him we live and move and exist.”
Acts 17:28
