The Attributes of God

The doctrine of the attributes of God invites us into one of the most worship-shaping studies in the whole of Christian theology. Scripture not only declares that God is; it reveals who He is. The Bible presents God’s attributes not as abstract ideas but as realities displayed in His actions, His character, and His self-revelation. When we speak of God’s attributes, we are describing the perfections of His being, what God has revealed Himself to be in His essence, nature, and works.

God is not partly gracious, partly holy, partly wise, or partly powerful. He is all that He is, perfectly and eternally, without division or contradiction. The attributes of God help the believer know Him, trust Him, and worship Him as He truly is.

The Biblical Foundation for Knowing God’s Attributes

Throughout Scripture, God reveals His character with clarity and authority. When Moses pleads to see the glory of God, the Lord proclaims His own name, “The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth” (Exodus 34:6). This is God interpreting God, an authoritative statement of divine identity.

The psalmist affirms the majesty of God’s character, “Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable” (Psalm 145:3). God’s attributes are not limited or discoverable by human speculation; they are revealed truth.

The Scriptures consistently portray God as unique in His being, “For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me” (Isaiah 46:9). To know God’s attributes is to know the One who stands above all creation in infinite perfection.

Communicable and Incommunicable Attributes

Historically, theologians have described God’s attributes in two broad categories. These categories do not divide God but help us understand how His nature relates to ours.

Incommunicable Attributes (those belonging to God alone)

These are perfections that distinguish God entirely from creation.

Aseity (Self-Existence): God depends on nothing outside Himself. He alone is the One who must be. “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14).

Eternity: God has no beginning and no end; He stands outside time. “From everlasting to everlasting, You are God” (Psalm 90:2).

Immutability (Unchangeableness): God does not change in His being, purposes, or character. “For I, the LORD, do not change” (Malachi 3:6).

Omnipresence: God is fully present everywhere. “Where can I go from Your Spirit?” (Psalm 139:7).

Omniscience: God knows all things perfectly and immediately. “His understanding is infinite” (Psalm 147:5).

Omnipotence: God possesses all power to accomplish His holy will. “With God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).

These incommunicable attributes emphasise God’s transcendence, His absolute distinction from creation.

Communicable Attributes (reflections of God seen dimly in humanity)

These attributes are shared with humanity in limited, imperfect ways.

Holiness: God is morally perfect and utterly set apart. “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts” (Isaiah 6:3).

Love: God’s love is self-giving, faithful, and rooted in His very nature. “God is love” (1 John 4:8).

Grace and Mercy: God shows undeserved favour and compassionate forgiveness. Grace is when God gives us something that we do not deserve, such as salvation. Mercy is when God does not give us something that we do deserve. “The LORD is gracious and merciful” (Psalm 145:8).

Justice and Righteousness: God always acts in perfect fairness and moral purity. “Righteous are You, O LORD” (Psalm 119:137).

Truth and Faithfulness: God is utterly reliable; His word is certain. “Your faithfulness continues throughout all generations” (Psalm 119:90).

Wisdom: God always chooses the highest ends by the best means. “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!” (Romans 11:33).

These attributes reveal God’s immanence, His nearness and relational generosity toward His creation.

The Unity of God’s Attributes

Though we study God’s perfections individually, God is not a collection of separate qualities. He is one, simple, undivided being. His love is holy love; His justice is wise justice; His mercy is omnipotent mercy. God never operates in fragments, He is always fully Himself.

This truth guards us from reducing God to one favourite attribute. The God of Scripture is not only love or only holy or only powerful. He is all of these perfectly, eternally, and simultaneously.

The Revelation of God’s Attributes in Christ

The ultimate display of God’s attributes is found in Jesus Christ. “He is the image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15).

What God is in His nature, Christ reveals in His person.

In Christ we see:

• The holiness of God confronting sin

• The love of God embracing the lost

• The mercy of God forgiving sinners

• The power of God conquering death

• The wisdom of God unfolded in redemption

Christ is not merely a messenger of God’s attributes, He is their perfect expression.

The Attributes of God and Christian Worship

Right doctrine fuels right worship. When believers grasp the greatness and goodness of God, their hearts are drawn to reverence, trust, and adoration. The psalmist’s response becomes ours, “Splendour and majesty are before Him, strength and beauty are in His sanctuary” (Psalm 96:6).

Studying God’s attributes is not an academic exercise, it is an invitation to worship the One who is worthy of all praise.

The doctrine of the attributes of God teaches us that the Lord is not distant, unknowable, or silent. He is the living God who reveals Himself so that His people may know Him truly. While His greatness is unsearchable, His character is beautifully knowable. The God of Scripture is perfect, unchanging, sovereign, wise, holy, gracious, and overflowing in steadfast love. To know this God is life itself.
