Joshua 1:6–9
Bible-study exercise: Joshua 1:6–9
Read Joshua 1:6–9 carefully.
“Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you.”
Questions
Observation (vv. 6–7): Why must Joshua be strong and courageous, and what boundaries are placed upon his obedience?
Observation (v. 8): What three actions concerning the Book of the Law precede the promise of success?
Interpretation (vv. 8–9): Does “prosperous” success promise Joshua personal wealth, or success in the mission God assigned him?
Answer Key
Joshua must lead Israel into possession of the land God swore to their fathers. He must obey the whole Law without turning aside to the right or left.
The Law must remain upon his mouth; he must meditate upon it day and night; and he must carefully obey everything written in it.
The promise concerns success in faithfully accomplishing Joshua’s God-given task, not a guarantee of personal riches. His courage rests upon God’s presence, while his conduct is directed by God’s Word.
