The Church is not a human organisation but a divine creation, those who have been redeemed by Christ and united to Him through the Spirit. Scripture presents the Church as both universal and local, visible and invisible, earthly and heavenly.

The Nature of the Church

The nature of the Church is that it is the redeemed community of God, called out of the world and united to Christ as His spiritual body. Scripture teaches that the Church is not merely a building or institution but a living fellowship of believers who belong to Jesus Christ and are indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

The apostle Paul writes, “Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it” (1 Corinthians 12:27). Christ Himself is the head of the Church (Ephesians 1:22–23), and through Him believers are joined together in faith, worship, and service. The Church therefore exists to glorify God, proclaim the gospel, build up believers in truth and holiness, and bear witness to Christ in the world until His return.

Christ declares, “I will build My church” (Matthew 16:18). The Church belongs to Him and is formed by His saving work.

Images of the Church

The New Testament presents several rich images that help us understand the nature of the church. Scripture describes believers as the Body of Christ, united to Him and to one another, each member uniquely gifted for service, “Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it” (1 Corinthians 12:27).

The church is also called the Bride of Christ, loved with sacrificial devotion and being sanctified by the Lord who gave Himself for her, “so that He might sanctify her… that she would be holy and blameless” (Ephesians 5:25–27).

Finally, believers together form the Temple of the Spirit, the dwelling place of God among His people, as Paul writes, “Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16). These images together reveal the church as a living, loved, and Spirit-indwelt community belonging to Christ.

The Marks of the Church

The marks of the church are the identifying characteristics that distinguish a true and faithful congregation of Christ. Historically, these have been summarised as the preaching of the Word, the administration of the ordinances, and the practice of church discipline within a community of accountable fellowship.

First, the true church is marked by the faithful proclamation of the Word of God, for the church is “the pillar and support of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15), and faith comes through hearing the message of Christ (Romans 10:17).

Second, the ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper are rightly administered, serving as visible signs that point to the saving work of Christ and the believer’s union with Him (Matthew 28:19; 1 Corinthians 11:23–26).

Third, the church maintains loving discipline and mutual accountability among its members, seeking both holiness and restoration when sin arises (Matthew 18:15–17; Galatians 6:1).

Where these marks are present, the church demonstrates its faithfulness to Christ, its Head, and functions as a visible witness to the gospel in the world.

The Mission of the Church

The mission of the church is to glorify God by proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ, making disciples, and building up believers in faith and holiness. Jesus commissioned His followers, saying, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20).

Through the preaching of the Word, the administration of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, fellowship, and service, the church bears witness to Christ in the world. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, believers are called to proclaim repentance and forgiveness of sins, nurture one another in love, and shine as a testimony of God’s saving grace until Christ returns.

The Leadership of the Church

The leadership of the church is established by God for the spiritual care, order, and growth of His people. In the New Testament, this leadership is primarily exercised through qualified elders (also called overseers or pastors) who shepherd the flock of God, teach sound doctrine, and guard the church from error.

The apostle Peter exhorted church leaders, saying, “Shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God… proving to be examples to the flock” (1 Peter 5:2–3).

Alongside elders, deacons serve the church by assisting in practical and administrative needs, allowing the elders to focus on prayer and the ministry of the Word (Acts 6:1–4). Biblical church leadership is therefore not a position of domination, but one of humble service under Christ, who is the true head of the church (Ephesians 1:22–23).

The Church is God’s redeemed community, called, commissioned, gifted, and cherished by Christ. Its mission continues until He returns.
