Decisions: Choosing the Path That Honours God

Life is filled with decisions. Some appear small and insignificant, while others shape the entire course of our lives. Every day we choose what to believe, whom to follow, how to respond, and what direction to take. Scripture continually reminds us that decisions are not merely practical matters they are spiritual matters. Behind every choice lies a heart either submitted to God or drifting from Him.

Many of the greatest blessings and tragedies recorded in the Bible came through human decisions. Adam chose disobedience. Lot chose the well-watered plains of Jordan. Moses chose to suffer affliction with the people of God rather than enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. The disciples chose to leave all and follow Christ. Pilate chose political safety over righteousness. Every decision carries consequences.

The Christian life is not built upon one great decision alone, but upon daily decisions to obey the Lord. We decide whether we will trust God or trust ourselves. We decide whether we will walk by faith or by sight. We decide whether we will surrender to truth or compromise with the world.

Wise decisions require spiritual discernment. Feelings are not enough. Pressure from others is not enough. Human wisdom alone is not enough. We need the guidance of God’s Word, the leadership of the Holy Spirit, and hearts willing to obey even when obedience is difficult.

God Teaches Us Responsibility

The first responsibility given to man involved choice and accountability.

“And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it…” — Genesis 2:15–17 KJV

God gave Adam freedom, but He also gave boundaries. Responsibility always accompanies privilege. Decisions are not isolated acts; they reveal whether we honour God’s authority.

The Lord still teaches His people responsibility. Every choice has moral and spiritual implications. We cannot live carelessly and expect spiritual strength.

Choices Reveal Character

Lot’s decision exposed the condition of his heart.

“And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan… Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan…” — Genesis 13:10–11 KJV

Lot chose according to appearance rather than spiritual wisdom. The land looked prosperous, but the environment was corrupt. His decision eventually brought sorrow to his family and spiritual ruin to his testimony.

Our decisions reveal what we truly value. A person’s character is often exposed not in public statements, but in private choices.

Daily Decisions to Follow God

Obedience is not occasional, it is daily.

“If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments…” — Deuteronomy 30:10 KJV

Walking with God requires continual surrender. Every day presents opportunities either to obey or resist Him. Spiritual strength is developed through repeated decisions to follow the Lord faithfully.

The Christian who waits for dramatic moments while neglecting daily obedience will struggle spiritually.

Do Not Delay When God Makes His Will Clear

Gideon sought confirmation from God, but eventually he had to act.

“Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor…” — Judges 6:37 KJV

There are times when careful confirmation is appropriate. Yet there also comes a point when delay becomes disobedience. Some believers continually seek more signs long after God has clearly spoken through His Word.

Once God gives sufficient light, faith must respond with action.

Wise Decisions Consider Everything Carefully

Jonathan and David carefully weighed circumstances, motives, and risks.

“Tomorrow is the new moon, and thou shalt be missed…” — 1 Samuel 20:18 KJV

Important decisions should never be rushed carelessly. Scripture encourages discernment, counsel, and thoughtful evaluation. Wise believers examine both positives and negatives rather than acting impulsively.

A spiritual decision is not emotional recklessness. Godly wisdom thinks carefully before acting.

Impatience Leads to Foolish Decisions

King Saul lost much because he refused to wait upon God.

“Because I saw that the people were scattered from me… therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me…” — 1 Samuel 13:11–12 KJV

Saul acted out of fear and impatience. Instead of trusting God’s timing, he forced matters into his own hands. Many poor decisions are made during moments of pressure, panic, and frustration.

Waiting upon God is often one of the hardest parts of spiritual maturity.

A Clouded Mind Produces Poor Judgment

King Ahasuerus made destructive decisions under the influence of excess.

“On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine…” — Esther 1:10 KJV

Alcohol weakened his judgment and led to reckless commands. Anything that clouds the mind weakens discernment. God calls His people to sobriety, clarity, and self-control.

A person whose thinking is governed by fleshly desires will struggle to make sound spiritual decisions.

Biblical Principles for Sound Decisions

Proverbs gives practical wisdom for decision-making.

“He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.” — Proverbs 18:13 KJV

“The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge…” — Proverbs 18:15 KJV

“He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.” — Proverbs 18:17 KJV

These verses teach several principles:

  1. Hear the full matter before deciding.

  2. Seek knowledge and understanding.

  3. Listen to both sides carefully.

  4. Avoid pride and hasty conclusions.

Godly decisions require humility and discernment.

Examine Your Motives

“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.” — Proverbs 21:2 KJV

Human beings are skilled at justifying themselves. Sometimes a decision may appear righteous outwardly while inward motives remain selfish.

We must honestly ask:

  1. Am I seeking God’s glory or my own?

  2. Am I motivated by faith or fear?

  3. Am I trying to obey God or protect myself?

The Lord examines motives as well as actions.

Following Christ Requires Difficult Decisions

When Jesus called Matthew, the response was immediate.

“And he arose, and followed him.” — Matthew 9:9 KJV

Following Christ often requires leaving behind comfort, security, relationships, ambitions, or sinful habits. Many people admire Jesus intellectually but refuse the costly decisions required for true discipleship.

The Christian life demands commitment.

Maintain an Eternal Perspective

“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” — Matthew 16:26 KJV

Temporary success is meaningless if eternal realities are ignored. Many decisions are driven by money, popularity, convenience, or pleasure, while spiritual consequences are forgotten.

Wise believers evaluate decisions in light of eternity.

Take Responsibility for Your Decisions

Pilate attempted to avoid responsibility.

“I am innocent of the blood of this just person…” — Matthew 27:24 KJV

Yet washing his hands did not remove his guilt. We cannot escape accountability for our choices. Blaming circumstances, culture, or other people does not excuse sinful decisions.

God calls His people to honesty, repentance, and responsibility.

Beware of Peer Pressure

The crowd influenced Pilate to release Barabbas and condemn Christ.

“And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.” — Luke 23:23 KJV

Peer pressure remains powerful today. Many people make destructive decisions because they fear rejection more than they fear God.

A believer must be willing to stand alone when truth requires it.

Seek God’s Guidance in Major Decisions

The early church carefully sought God’s direction when choosing a replacement for Judas.

“And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men…” — Acts 1:24 KJV

Important decisions should involve:

  • Prayer

  • Biblical qualification

  • Spiritual wisdom

  • Dependence upon God

God never intended His people to navigate life independently from Him.

Respect Godly Authority and Church Decisions

“And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church…” — Acts 15:4 KJV

The church in Acts worked together under spiritual leadership to resolve serious issues. God often provides wisdom and protection through biblical authority and mature believers.

Independent pride frequently leads to poor decisions.

God Gives Wisdom in Difficult Circumstances

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God…” — James 1:5 KJV

This is one of the most comforting promises in Scripture. God does not abandon His people when they face difficult decisions. He invites them to seek His wisdom.

Sometimes the path forward is unclear, but God promises to give wisdom generously to those who ask in faith.

Final Remarks

Decisions shape lives, families, ministries, and eternities. Every choice either strengthens our walk with God or weakens it. The world encourages impulsive living, emotional reactions, and self-centred choices, but Scripture calls believers to wisdom, patience, faith, and obedience.

Good decisions are rarely accidental. They come through prayer, Scripture, discernment, humility, and surrender to God’s will.

The safest place for any believer is a life fully submitted to the Lord. When our hearts are yielded to Him, our decisions become less about pleasing ourselves and more about honouring Christ.

May we learn to say daily, “Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth…” — Psalm 86:11 KJV
