“And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.”
Job 28:28
The world often defines wisdom as intelligence, education, or experience. God defines it differently. True wisdom begins with “the fear of the Lord.” This is not a fear of terror, but a reverent awe that honours God, trusts His Word, and desires to obey Him.
Knowledge alone does not make a person wise. A person may know many facts about the Bible yet fail to live according to its truths. Biblical wisdom is practical. It is seen in a life that submits to God and seeks to please Him.
The second half of the verse reminds us that understanding is demonstrated by action: “to depart from evil is understanding.” Genuine faith produces holy living. When we turn away from sin, refuse temptation, and choose what is right, we are showing that we understand God’s will.
Every day presents countless decisions. Instead of asking merely, “What do I want?” or “What seems best?” we should first ask, “What honours the Lord?” A heart that reverences God will be guided by His wisdom and kept from many sorrows.
May we seek not merely to know more, but to walk more closely with the Lord, for that is the pathway of true wisdom.
Prayer
