Prepared Hearts

“For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the LORD and to practise it, and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel.”

Ezra 7:10

“He did evil because he did not set his heart to seek the LORD.”

2 Chronicles 12:14

The difference between a fruitful life and a wasted one is often settled in a quiet place long before any public moment arrives. Scripture draws a striking contrast between two men: Ezra the priest and Rehoboam the king. Outwardly their callings were very different, yet the condition of their hearts determined the legacy of each.

Ezra’s strength did not begin with his skill as a scribe or with the favour he received from the Persian king. It began with a deliberate inward decision. The Word of God says, “Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the LORD and to practise it, and to teach” (Ezra 7:10). Notice the order. He first set his heart. Before he opened a scroll, before he addressed the people, there was an unseen preparation. Ezra resolved that God’s Word would govern his life. Study, obedience, and teaching flowed from that settled commitment.

Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, walked the opposite path. Though surrounded by the heritage of David and the wisdom of his father, the record of his reign is summed up in one sobering sentence: “He did evil because he did not set his heart to seek the LORD” (2 Chron. 12:14). The tragedy was not merely poor decisions but a heart left unprepared. Without intentional seeking, power corrupted him and counsel misled him.

These two verses teach that the heart is the starting line of spiritual life. Circumstances, education, and opportunity matter far less than whether we have “set” ourselves toward God. Ezra did not drift into faithfulness; he aimed his soul like an archer fixing a target. Rehoboam did not plan to fail; he simply never prepared to succeed.

To prepare the heart is more than warm emotion. Ezra’s example shows three movements. First, he sought to know the law of the LORD. Genuine devotion hungers for truth, not merely for feelings. Secondly, he determined to practise what he learned. Obedience guarded him from the hypocrisy of knowing without doing. Thirdly, he desired to teach others, allowing God’s Word to flow through him for the blessing of the nation.

How often we attempt these steps in reverse. We speak before we obey, and we obey before we truly understand. The result is shallow service and weary hearts. The Lord calls us back to the beginning, to set our hearts.

Each day presents the same crossroads that faced Ezra and Rehoboam. Will we approach Scripture casually, or will we come with intention? Will we allow distractions to shape our inner life, or will we deliberately seek the LORD? Preparation is not dramatic, yet it determines everything.

Ask the Spirit of God to help you fix your heart today. Open the Bible with Ezra’s resolve: to study, to practise, and then to share. A prepared heart becomes fertile soil where God’s purposes grow. An unprepared heart, like Rehoboam’s, leaves even the greatest privileges barren.

May the Lord grant us the grace to say, with our choices and our time, “I have set my heart to seek the LORD.”
