“Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, That hovers over its young, He spread His wings and caught them, He carried them on His pinions.”
Deuteronomy 32:11
The word pinions is not one that we commonly use today, yet it carries a beautiful and encouraging meaning in the Scriptures. Pinions are the strong flight feathers of a bird’s wings, particularly those associated with an eagle. They enable the bird to soar through the skies and maintain its strength and stability in flight.
The word pinions first appears in the Bible in Deuteronomy 32:11, where Moses describes the Lord’s care for the nation of Israel. Using the illustration of an eagle caring for its young, Moses reminds the Israelites how God had protected, guided, and sustained them throughout their wilderness journey.
The Hebrew word translated pinions is ‘ebrah, which refers to the feathers or wings of a bird. In this passage, the eagle provides a powerful picture of God’s tender care and sovereign protection. Just as the eagle watches over its young, so the Lord watched over Israel, delivering them from Egypt and leading them through the wilderness.
This beautiful imagery appears again in Psalm 91:4, where the psalmist declares, “He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.”
Here, the picture is not simply one of strength but also of tenderness and security. As a bird spreads its wings to shelter its young from danger, so God provides refuge for those who place their trust in Him. His protection is not dependent upon human strength or ability but upon His own unchanging faithfulness.
There is something particularly comforting about this description of God’s care. The same Lord who possesses unlimited power is also the One who lovingly watches over His people. His greatness does not diminish His tenderness, nor does His sovereignty lessen His concern for those who belong to Him.
Of course, these passages do not teach that believers will never experience suffering, hardship, or difficulty. Rather, they remind us that whatever circumstances we may face, we remain under the sovereign care of a faithful God.
The imagery of pinions also reminds us of the words of the Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 23:37, where He expressed His desire to gather the children of Jerusalem together, just as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. Once again, Scripture uses the familiar picture of a bird sheltering its young to communicate the tenderness and compassion of God.
The great lesson of the pinions is that our security rests not in the strength of our own wings, but in the faithfulness of the One beneath whose wings we find refuge. When difficulties arise, when the future appears uncertain, or when our own strength begins to fail, we can take comfort in knowing that the Lord remains faithful. His care is sufficient, His wisdom is perfect, and His promises never fail.
May we learn to rest beneath the shadow of His wings, trusting the God who has promised never to forsake His people. Psalm 63:7 declares, “For You have been my help, And in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.”
The question we must ask ourselves is this: Are we truly resting beneath the protective care of God, or are we relying upon our own strength to face life’s difficulties?
It is easy to speak of trusting the Lord when everything is going well, but genuine faith is often revealed when circumstances become difficult and the way ahead seems uncertain. Like the young eagle that depends upon the strength and care of its parent, we must learn to depend upon the Lord rather than upon our own understanding and abilities.
Whatever burdens we may be carrying today, whether they concern our families, our health, our future, or the trials of everyday life, we can bring them before the Lord in prayer, knowing that He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).
However, trusting in God’s protection does not mean that we will never experience hardship or suffering. It means that even in the midst of life’s storms, we can remain confident in His wisdom, His sovereignty, and His unfailing faithfulness.
Let us therefore make it our daily practice to seek refuge in the Lord through prayer, obedience to His Word, and a steadfast dependence upon His promises. Rather than allowing fear and uncertainty to govern our hearts, let us remember that the God who faithfully carried Israel through the wilderness is the same unchanging God who watches over His people today.
The strength of the Christian life is not found in our ability to hold everything together, but in the faithfulness of the Lord who holds us securely in His care. When life’s storms arise, do not depend upon the strength of your own wings. Seek refuge beneath His pinions, and rest in the faithfulness of the One who will never forsake you.
“When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You.”
Psalm 56:3
