Bible-Study Exercise: Mark 1:14–15

Read Mark 1:14–15 carefully.

Key phrase: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand”

Questions

  1. Observation: What event had occurred before Jesus began preaching in Galilee?

  2. Observation: What four main elements appear in Jesus’ proclamation in verse 15?

  3. Interpretation: How are repentance and faith related in Jesus’ call?

Answer Key

  1. John had been taken into custody. This marks a transition from John’s preparatory ministry to Jesus’ public ministry in Galilee.

  2. The appointed time is fulfilled; God’s kingdom has drawn near; people must repent; and they must believe the gospel.

  3. Repentance is a change of mind that turns from sin and self-rule, while faith turns toward God and receives His good news. They are distinct but inseparable responses to the gospel.
