Bible-Study Exercise: Romans 12: 1–2

Read Romans 12:1–2 carefully.

Key phrase: “present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God”

Questions

  1. Observation: What appeal does Paul make, and what reason does he give for it?

  2. Observation: Note the two contrasting commands in verse 2. What must believers reject, and what must they undergo?

  3. Interpretation: How does a renewed mind enable a believer to discern God’s will?

Answer Key

  1. Paul appeals to believers to offer their whole lives to God. His appeal rests upon “the mercies of God”. God’s gracious work explained in the preceding chapters.

  2. Believers must refuse conformity to the present age and undergo inward transformation through the renewing of the mind.

  3. A renewed mind evaluates life according to God’s truth rather than the world’s standards. This enables the believer to recognise and approve what pleases God.
