Notes and Jottings

Acts 5
(5:3). lie to the Holy Spirit. Satan filled the heart of Anania to lie. The lie was about how much they had received. Lying to the Holy Spirit is the same as lying to God, because the Holy Spirit is God.
(5:29). God must be obeyed rather than men. We are told in Scripture that Christians ought to obey the governing authorises over them, unless they cause them to sin or to disobey God. Here is an example where it is wise to disobey the powers that be. We must be ready to face the consequences for obedience to God and disobedience to man.
(5:33). were cut to the heart. Preaching in the power of the Holy Spirit often convicts the conscience of sinfulness and exposes evilness.
(5:34). Gamaliel. A respected rabbi and teacher of the Law. He addressed the Sanhedrin and spoke in favour of Peter and the other apostles, that they should not be put to death. Paul was one of his students as mentioned in Acts 22:3.
(5:37). Judas the Galilean. Gamaliel mentioned him in his speech to the Sanhedrin as an example of someone whose uprising failed. This revolt in A.D. 6 is mentioned by the Jewish historian Josephus in his writings.
