Does Science and the Bible Agree?

blue skies filled of stars

The question of whether science and the Bible agree has been debated for centuries. Many assume that science and Scripture are in conflict, yet this assumption is based more on misunderstanding than on careful examination. When both science and the Bible are properly understood, they are not enemies but allies. The Bible, as the inspired Word of God, speaks truthfully in all that it affirms, and science, when conducted honestly, discovers truth within God’s creation. Since God is the Author of both Scripture and creation, there can be no genuine contradiction between them.

As the Bible declares 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.”

If Scripture is inspired by God, and God is truthful and omniscient, then Scripture cannot contain scientific error. Any apparent conflict must arise either from misinterpretation of Scripture or incomplete scientific knowledge.

The Foundation: God Is the Author of Creation and Scripture

Science is the study of the natural world. The Bible teaches that God created that natural world. Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

Because God created the universe, its laws, and its order, scientific investigation is essentially the study of God’s handiwork. Psalm 19:1 affirms this reality, “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.”

Science observes the “work of His hands,” while Scripture reveals the identity and purposes of the One who made them. Both sources point to the same truth.

The Bible Accurately Describes Scientific Realities

Far from containing scientific errors, the Bible contains numerous statements that align remarkably with modern scientific discoveries, often written thousands of years before science confirmed them.

The Earth Suspended in Space

The Bible describes the earth as suspended in empty space. Job 26:7 says, “He hangs the earth on nothing.”

This statement was written long before modern astronomy. Ancient cultures commonly believed the earth rested on pillars, animals, or other physical supports. Yet the Bible correctly describes the earth as suspended freely in space, a scientific reality confirmed centuries later.

The Roundness of the Earth

The Bible refers to the earth as circular. Isaiah 40:22 says, “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth.” The Hebrew word used here conveys roundness. While many ancient societies believed in a flat earth, Scripture accurately described its true form.

The Water Cycle

The Bible describes the hydrological cycle in detail long before meteorology explained it. Job 36:27–28 says, “For He draws up the drops of water, They distil rain from the mist, Which the clouds pour down.”

The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 1:7, “All the rivers flow into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they flow again.”

These passages describe evaporation, condensation, and precipitation, the complete water cycle.

The Vast Number of Stars

Before telescopes, people believed stars were few and countable. Yet Scripture states, “Look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” (Genesis 15:5)

Jeremiah 33:22 says, “As the host of heaven cannot be counted.”

Modern astronomy confirms there are billions of galaxies, each containing billions of stars far beyond human counting.

The Laws of Health and Sanitation

The Mosaic Law contains advanced health principles thousands of years before modern medicine understood them.

For example, quarantine. Leviticus 13:46, “He shall remain unclean all the days during which he has the infection; he is unclean. He shall live alone.”

And washing with running water, “It shall be washed with water and be unclean until evening.” (Leviticus 15:13)

These instructions prevented the spread of disease long before germ theory was discovered.

The Bible and Scientific Order

Science depends upon consistent natural laws. The Bible explains why such order exists: God sustains the universe. Colossians 1:17 says, “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

Without this stability, scientific investigation would be impossible. The reliability of nature reflects the reliability of its Creator.

Are There Scientific Errors in the Bible?

Critics often claim that the Bible contains scientific errors. However, upon careful examination, these claims fail for several reasons.

The Bible Is Not a Science Textbook

The Bible’s primary purpose is theological, not technical. It often uses observational language, just as modern people do.

For example, people today speak of “sunrise” and “sunset,” even though scientifically the earth rotates. This is phenomenological language describing things as they appear.

The Bible uses the same kind of accurate observational description.

Many Alleged Errors Result from Misinterpretation

Apparent conflicts often arise from misunderstanding Scripture, not actual scientific error.

For example, Psalm 104:5 says, “He established the earth upon its foundations, So that it will not totter forever and ever.”

This refers to stability, not immobility. The earth is stable in its orbit and structure, which science confirms.

Scientific theories are revised regularly. What was considered scientific fact centuries ago has often been proven wrong. In contrast, Scripture remains unchanged and continues to align with reality. Psalm 119:160 declares, “The sum of Your word is truth.”

Science Confirms the Biblical Teaching of a Beginning

Science now affirms that the universe had a beginning, which agrees with Genesis 1:1.

The Second Law of Thermodynamics also confirms that the universe is running down, implying it had a starting point.

Scripture declared this long before science recognised it, “For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth.” (Exodus 20:11)

Science Cannot Explain Ultimate Origins, but the Bible Does

Science explains processes but cannot explain ultimate origins, why anything exists at all.

The Bible provides the answer, “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible.” (Colossians 1:16)

Science describes mechanisms. Scripture reveals the Creator behind those mechanisms.

The Harmony Between Science and Scripture

When properly understood, science consistently confirms biblical truth. The conflict is not between science and the Bible, but between human interpretations of science and human interpretations of Scripture. True science reveals God’s creation, true Scripture reveals God’s Word. Both originate from the same Author.

The Limitations of Science Compared to Scripture

Science is limited to observing the natural world. It cannot answer questions of purpose, morality, or ultimate meaning.

Scripture provides answers to these deeper questions, “Through faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God.” (Hebrews 11:3)

Faith and science are not enemies. Science reveals how creation works; Scripture reveals why creation exists.

Final Remarks

Science and the Bible are not in conflict. They are in harmony because both originate from God. The Bible contains no scientific errors. Instead, it consistently affirms truths about the natural world that science has later confirmed.

Scripture stands as the reliable and authoritative Word of God, declaring truth about both the spiritual and physical universe.

As Romans 1:20 states, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made.”
