“Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons.”

Mark 16:9

Mary Magdalene’s story is one of the most remarkable testimonies of redemption and devotion in all of Scripture. When we first meet her, she is described as a woman from whom Jesus had cast out seven demons (Luke 8:2). She had experienced deep bondage, mental, emotional, and spiritual torment. Yet, in one encounter with Jesus, her entire life was transformed.

From that moment on, Mary followed Him wholeheartedly. She traveled with Jesus and His disciples, supporting His ministry with her own means (Luke 8:3). She stood by the cross when nearly everyone else fled (John 19:25). And on the morning of His resurrection, Mary was the first person to see the risen Christ and the first to proclaim His victory (John 20:16–18).

Her life reminds us that no past is too broken for Christ to redeem, and no life too ordinary for Him to use in extraordinary ways. Mary’s deliverance led to devotion, and her devotion led to the privilege of divine revelation, she was entrusted with the greatest message in history: “He is risen!”

Life Lessons

  1. Jesus redeems completely.
Mary’s deliverance from seven demons (Mark 16:9) shows that the grace of God reaches into the darkest places. When Jesus sets us free, He doesn’t just remove the chains, He restores purpose.

  2. Devotion flows from gratitude.
Mary never forgot what Jesus had done for her. Her faithfulness, even at the cross, was not born of duty, but of deep gratitude. True devotion springs from remembering our deliverance.

  3. Faithfulness matters more than prominence.
Mary wasn’t an apostle, teacher, or religious leader. Yet her faithfulness positioned her to be the first witness of the resurrection. God often reveals His greatest truths to hearts that are simply faithful.

  4. Jesus calls us by name.
When Mary wept outside the tomb, she didn’t recognize the risen Jesus, until He said, “Mary!” (John 20:16). In that personal moment, she knew Him. Our Savior knows us intimately, and in calling us by name, He restores both our identity and our hope.

Application

Like Mary, we are called to live as people redeemed for relationship.

  • Remember where Jesus brought you from, and let gratitude fuel your devotion.

  • Stand near the cross when life gets hard, knowing that resurrection follows suffering.

  • Listen for His voice calling your name each day in prayer and Scripture.

Mary Magdalene’s life was transformed not just because she was freed, but because she stayed close to the One who freed her.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the power of Your redemption and the beauty of Your mercy. Like Mary Magdalene, I once was bound, but You have set me free. Help me to follow You with a heart of gratitude and faithfulness. Teach me to stay near You in every season, at the cross, in the waiting, and in the joy of resurrection.

Call my name, Lord, and let me recognize Your voice above all others. Use my life to proclaim that You are alive and still transforming hearts today.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
