“Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.”
James 1:2–3
James, the half-brother of Jesus and the leader of the assembly that met at Jerusalem (Acts 15:13; Galatians 1:19), is a remarkable example of humility, wisdom, and steadfast faith. Though he grew up with Jesus, James did not initially believe in Him as the Messiah (John 7:5). But after the resurrection, everything changed, the risen Christ appeared to James personally (1 Corinthians 15:7), and from that moment forward, his life was transformed.
James became known for his deep devotion to prayer and his unwavering faith. Early church writings even describe him as “James the Just,” a man whose knees were calloused from constant prayer. As the leader of the Jerusalem church, James guided believers through seasons of persecution, division, and doctrinal uncertainty. When disputes arose about the inclusion of Gentiles, James led the council with both truth and grace (Acts 15:13–21), seeking harmony in the body of Christ.
In his letter, James calls believers to a practical faith, one that produces action, patience, and righteousness. He reminds us that faith is not mere belief, but a lived-out trust in God, “But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.” James 1:22
James challenges us to let our faith shape our words, our works, and our worship. His example teaches us that leadership in God’s kingdom flows not from position, but from character, from humble obedience and consistent integrity.
