Marriage and the family are foundational institutions established by God from the beginning of creation. In the Christian worldview, these are not merely social constructs but sacred covenants and divine blessings, designed for the flourishing of individuals, the stability of society, and the glory of God. Scripture repeatedly affirms their importance, providing instruction, encouragement, and warnings concerning their preservation.
Marriage: God’s Holy Covenant
The Bible begins with the creation of marriage in the Garden of Eden. God, seeing that it was “not good that the man should be alone,” made a suitable companion for Adam (Genesis 2:18). Eve was created from Adam’s side, signifying their unity and equality before God.
The first marriage is described in Genesis 2:24, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” This verse establishes three core principles of marriage: leaving, cleaving, and becoming one flesh. Marriage is meant to be exclusive, permanent, and intimate. Jesus reaffirmed this divine design in Matthew 19:6, saying, “Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” Thus, marriage is more than a human contract, it is a God-ordained covenant binding husband and wife together under His authority.
The Purposes of Marriage
Marriage is a divine gift with multiple purposes:
Companionship – God provided Eve so Adam would not be alone (Genesis 2:18). Marriage meets the deep human need for fellowship and mutual support.
Procreation – God blessed Adam and Eve, commanding them, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it” (Genesis 1:28). Children are a heritage from the Lord (Psalm 127:3).
Purity – The apostle Paul wrote, “Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband” (1 Corinthians 7:2). Marriage provides the proper context for intimacy, guarding against immorality.
Reflection of Christ and the Church – Paul compared marriage to the relationship between Christ and His Church, saying, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it” (Ephesians 5:25). In this way, marriage becomes a living parable of the gospel.
The Family: God’s Design for Nurture and Training
From the foundation of marriage flows the family. Children are not only blessings but also responsibilities. The family is the primary place for spiritual instruction, moral training, and character formation.
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 commands, “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”
Parents are called to model faith and obedience, passing on God’s truth to future generations. Fathers in particular are charged with spiritual leadership, “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4).
When families are rooted in Christ, they become strong witnesses to the world, lights shining in a culture that often dismisses God’s design.
The Blessings of a Godly Marriage and Family
The psalmist declares, “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it” (Psalm 127:1).
When God is the foundation, marriage and family bring joy, stability, and spiritual fruit. A faithful spouse is described as a great blessing, “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD” (Proverbs 18:22).
Likewise, children are seen not as burdens but as rewards, “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward” (Psalm 127:3).
Conclusion
Marriage and the family are sacred gifts from God, designed for companionship, procreation, purity, and as a testimony of Christ’s love for His Church. They are also the cornerstone of society, where children are nurtured and faith is passed down. In a world where the sanctity of marriage and family is often diminished, Christians are called to uphold these institutions with reverence and obedience to God’s Word. As believers walk in God’s design, their homes become testimonies of His grace, reflecting His love to the world and pointing others to the ultimate marriage between Christ and His redeemed people.
