An Introduction to the Seven Dispensations

Throughout history, Christians have sought to understand God’s unfolding plan for humanity as revealed in the Bible. One approach to studying Scripture is known as dispensationalism. This framework views the Bible as a record of different periods, or “dispensations,” in which God interacts with people in distinct ways. Each dispensation highlights particular responsibilities given to humanity, humanity’s failure to fully obey, and God’s faithful response of judgment and grace.

The word dispensation comes from a term meaning “stewardship” or “administration.” Just as a household manager is entrusted with certain duties, so humanity has been entrusted with different responsibilities at different times in God’s plan. While the methods of God’s administration vary, His character and ultimate purpose remain constant: to glorify Himself through the redemption offered in Christ.

Traditionally, Bible teachers identify seven major dispensations:

  1. Innocence – from Creation to the Fall of Man.

  2. Conscience – from the Fall to the Flood.

  3. Human Government – from the Flood to the call of Abraham.

  4. Promise – from Abraham to the giving of the Law.

  5. Law – from Sinai to the cross of Christ.

  6. Grace – from the cross to the Second Coming.

  7. Kingdom – the millennial reign of Christ on earth.

Each dispensation reveals more of God’s truth and His plan of salvation, culminating in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Studying them provides a framework for interpreting Scripture, tracing the consistent thread of God’s sovereignty, and appreciating the progressive unfolding of His redemptive purpose.

In the following sections, we will explore each dispensation in detail, its key features, biblical foundation, humanity’s responsibility, and God’s response, so that we may gain a deeper understanding of how the whole Bible tells one unified story of God’s grace. Stay turned as we will explore each of the seven dispensations in more detail, in the coming days.
