Theme: The Divine Power and Authority of the Lord Jesus Christ
Key Verse: Matthew 28:18
Introduction
The power of the Lord Jesus Christ is one of the great truths revealed throughout the Bible. From the Old Testament prophecies concerning the coming Messiah to the New Testament accounts of His earthly ministry, death, and resurrection, Scripture consistently demonstrates that Jesus Christ possesses divine power and authority.
Unlike human power, which is limited by weakness, circumstances, and death, the power of Christ is without limitation. He has authority over sin, sickness, nature, life, and death itself.
The power of Christ is not merely something to be admired. It is a divine reality upon which every believer can depend. The same Lord who calmed the storm, healed the sick, forgave sinners, and rose triumphantly from the grave is able to strengthen, sustain, and keep those who place their trust in Him.
Christ’s Power to Save
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 63:1
Key Truth: Jesus Christ possesses the power to save sinners completely.
Isaiah 63:1 presents a mighty figure coming in righteousness, possessing the power to save. In its immediate context, the passage describes the Lord as a victorious divine warrior who executes judgment and accomplishes deliverance. In the wider testimony of Scripture, salvation is found in the Lord Jesus Christ.
No sinner is beyond the saving power of Christ. His death upon the cross provides the sufficient sacrifice for sin, and His resurrection demonstrates His victory over death.

Christ’s Power to Pardon Sin
Scripture Reading: Matthew 9:6
Key Truth: Jesus Christ possesses divine authority to forgive sins.
When Jesus healed the paralysed man, He demonstrated that His authority extended beyond physical healing. He declared that the Son of Man possessed authority on earth to forgive sins.
The religious leaders understood that the forgiveness of sins belonged to God. By claiming this authority and demonstrating His power through the healing of the man, Jesus revealed His divine identity.
Christ does not merely overlook sin. He has provided the means by which sinners may be forgiven through His sacrificial death.

Christ’s Infinite Power
Scripture Reading: Matthew 28:18
Key Truth: The risen Lord Jesus Christ possesses universal authority.
Following His resurrection, Jesus declared that all authority had been given to Him in heaven and on earth. This statement reveals the universal scope of His authority.
The Greek word exousia, translated as “authority,” refers to the right and power to exercise rule or command. Jesus is not merely a religious teacher or prophet; He is the risen Lord to whom all authority belongs.
As the eternal Son of God, Christ possesses divine power. His declaration in Matthew 28:18 particularly emphasises the authority given to Him as the risen Messiah.

Christ’s Power Over Nature
Scripture Reading: Luke 8:22–25
Key Truth: Jesus Christ has authority over the natural creation.
While crossing the Sea of Galilee, Jesus and His disciples encountered a violent storm. Although the disciples feared for their lives, Jesus demonstrated complete authority over the wind and waves.
By His command, the storm ceased and calm was restored. The disciples were astonished because the forces of nature obeyed Him.
This miracle demonstrates that Jesus possesses authority over creation itself. It also teaches believers that circumstances which are beyond human control are never beyond the authority of Christ.

Christ’s Power Over His Own Life
Scripture Reading: John 10:17–18
Key Truth: Jesus Christ willingly laid down His life and possessed authority to take it up again.
The death of Jesus Christ was not an accident or an unexpected defeat. He willingly surrendered His life in obedience to the Father’s will.
Jesus declared that no one took His life from Him against His will. He laid it down voluntarily and possessed authority to take it up again.
This reveals the voluntary nature of Christ’s sacrifice and His divine authority over life and death. His resurrection was accomplished through the power of the triune God.

In His prayer to the Father, Jesus spoke of the authority given to Him over all mankind and His ability to give eternal life to those whom the Father had given Him.
Eternal life is more than endless existence. It involves knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent.
Christ is the source of eternal life. This life cannot be earned through religious observances, moral achievement, or good works. It is received through faith in Him.

Key Truth: The miracles of Jesus demonstrated God’s power working through Him.
Peter described the earthly ministry of Jesus as one characterised by the anointing of the Holy Spirit and power.

Christ’s Power Demonstrated by His Resurrection
Scripture Reading: Romans 1:3–4
Key Truth: The resurrection of Jesus Christ powerfully declares His identity as the Son of God.
The resurrection is central to the Christian faith. Jesus Christ did not remain in the grave but rose bodily from the dead on the third day.
Paul explains that Christ was declared the Son of God with power through His resurrection.
The resurrection did not make Jesus the Son of God. Rather, it powerfully vindicated and demonstrated the identity He already possessed.
Because Christ lives, believers have the assurance that His sacrifice has been accepted, death has been conquered, and the promise of future resurrection is certain.

Power Bestowed by God
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 40:28–31
Key Truth: God is the source of strength for those who depend upon Him.
Isaiah 40:29 speaks of God’s ability to give strength to the weary and increase the power of those who lack might.
Although this passage speaks directly of the Lord’s sustaining power rather than specifically of Christ receiving power, it complements the study by showing that divine strength is available to God’s people.
The believer’s strength is not found in personal ability or determination but in dependence upon the Lord.
Through union with Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit, Christians are strengthened to endure trials, resist temptation, and faithfully serve God.

Practical Application
The study of Christ’s power should lead us beyond an intellectual understanding of His authority to a personal dependence upon Him.
The believer can trust Christ for salvation because He is mighty to save. We can rest in His forgiveness because He has authority to pardon sin. We can face uncertain circumstances because He rules over creation. We can face death with confidence because He has conquered the grave.
Christ’s power should also encourage obedience, faithful service, and perseverance. We are not called to live the Christian life in our own strength, but through dependence upon the Lord who sustains His people.
Final Scripture for Meditation: Ephesians 3:20–21
Consider the greatness of God’s power at work in believers and the glory that belongs to Him through Jesus Christ. The power of Christ is not limited to the miracles recorded in the Gospels. The risen Lord continues to save, sustain, and strengthen His people, and His authority will never diminish.
